When we think of pansy diseases, Botrytis blight, Cercospora leaf spots and various root rots top the list, but pansy downy mildew occurs sporadically often not identified until significant foliar damage is visible.
As part of grant funding from USDA-NIFA SCRI, a team of researchers compiled known information on pansy downy mildew, factors affecting its appearance and ways to mitigate its damage. The result is a dossier covering plant and fungal biology, disease epidemiology and symptoms, host range and geographic distribution along with management options and genomics. For this disease, because it occurs occasionally, it is not well studied and little is known about many key elements of its life cycle and disease development.
