Workshop Description
On the first day (Day 0), we hosted a tour of three sites related to production and maintenance of ornamental horticulture plants. We visited the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, which is a combination of botanical garden and naturalized areas for animals, the Center for Horticulture and Research at Altman’s, and Mellano and Co. which grows cut flowers, foliage and certain seasonal potted crops like poinsettias.
On the second day (Day 1), we started our priority discussions with introductions and then updates on the IR-4 Project and on the Environmental Horticulture and Biopesticide & Organic Support Programs. This was followed by individual discipline sessions (Pathology, Entomology, Weed Science) for active ingredient updates from the registrants and detailed discussions for each potential project. At the end of the day, we voted on the projects based on priority via sticker caucus.
On the third day (Day 2), we discussed the outcomes and then held breakout sessions for regional priority discussions. We also discussed various use sites for research and whether they fell under the EPA definitions for greenhouse.
